How to Create a Wikispace

  1. Go to this link to receive an ad-free EDUCATOR account: Educator Wikispaces Account.
  2. Choose a username and password.
  3. Choose a name for your wikispaces. Your address will become: "[chosen name].wikispaces.com."
  4. You're ready to experiment. Take the tour.
  5. Or try the Wiki Teacher's Walkthrough.

What You Can Do with a Wikispace

  1. It works like a simple webpage. You can write text, upload pictures, and create hyperlinks.
  2. Store documents.
  3. Embed videos.
  4. Embed widgets. (Google Docs is a favorite of mine.)
  5. Keep a list of links. (for general or project use)
  6. Schedule projects. (Doodle)
  7. Promote learning outside of the classroom.
  8. Hold a discussion forum. (Students must have their own Wiki accounts. Now you can set them up for them!)
  9. Organize your classes! Keep all your units together. Post HW. Post PowerPoints from class discussions. Post student work!

LET'S PRACTICE in our WIKI WORKSPACE!

1. How to Write Text, Upload Pictures, and Create Hyperlinks

  1. Click on "Edit this page." It works pretty much like a Word document.
  2. To post pictures, click on the PALM TREE button on the Wiki toolbar. Upload a picture and insert.
  3. To create a hyperlink, highlight the text you want to make into a link and click on the EARTH button on the Wiki toolbar.
  4. Enter the appropriate url. Choose if it's a Wiki link (you can create new ones here) or an external link (internet address).
  5. Lock/Unlock the page.

2. How to Store Documents

  1. To post documents, click on the PALM TREE button in the Wiki toolbar. Upload a document (.doc, .pdf) and insert.
  2. Give your documents meaningful names because that's how they will be identified in your wikispace.

3. How to Embed Videos

  1. Find a video. (YouTube, TeacherTube, Daily Motion, etc.)
  2. Find the embed code. (A big long garbled mess beginning and ending with a "<" and a ">")
  3. Copy this code to the clipboard.
  4. Click on the TV button in the Wiki toolbar.
  5. Choose "Video."
  6. Click the program you're using.
  7. Paste the embed code.
  8. Save.
  9. The media will be a gray box in the edit area, and will only appear once you click on the SAVE button in the Wiki toolbar.

4. How to Embed Widgets

  1. Find the embed code of the widget you'd like to embed.
  2. Click on the TV button in the Wiki toolbar.
  3. Everything listed there is a widget, an application that can be embedded in your Wikispace.
  4. Click on the corresponding application.
  5. Choose the program you're using.
  6. Paste the embed code.
  7. Save.
  8. The media will be a gray box in the edit area, and will only appear once you click on the SAVE button in the Wiki toolbar.

Let's try Google Docs. (You'll need to set up a Google account.)
